Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

1. What is Tantra? (9 November)
Some preliminary definitions. Tantric scriptures as a new revelation. Tantric versus Vedic. The main features of Tantra. Theories on the origin of the phenomenon.
2. Śaiva Tantras (16 November)
General characteristics of Śaiva Tantras (Āgamas). Classification of the Śaiva literature. Atimārga and Mantramārga. The Atimārga traditions: Pāśupatas (i), Lākulas (ii) and Kāpālikas (iii) traditions.
3. Non-dualistic Śaiva Tantras (23 November)
Mantramārga. Mantrapīṭha and Vidyāpītḥa. Kaulism and non-dualistic schools. The four traditions (āmnayas): Trika, Krama, Kubjikā and Tripurasundarī. The Kashmiri traditions: The Śivasūtras, the Spanda and the Pratyabhijñā traditions.
4. Dualistic Śaiva Tantra and Vaiṣṇava Tantra (30 November)
The Śaiva-Siddhānta: texts and doctrines. Vaiṣṇavism and Tantra: the Pāñcarātra school.
5. The Tantric Body (14 December)
Subtle and gross body. The structure of the yogic body. The role of gestures (mudrā) and impositions (nyāsa).
6. The Role of Language in Tantra (11 January)
The word as the manifestation of the divine. The role and the function of formulas (mantras).
7. The Tantric Rituals and Sexual dimension of Tantra (18 January)
Tantra as hyper-ritualism. Some examples of Tantric rituals. The worship of the deity (pūjā) and the initiation of the practitioner. Sex as instrumental to power and salvation. The cult of the Yoginī. Transgressive rituals. (dīkṣā) (25 January).
8. Tantric Philosophy: the School of the Recognition (25 January)
Authors and texts of the Pratyabhijñā. Philosophical doctrines. The problem of the existence of the self. Excerpts of texts in translation.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Oral exam at the end of the course. Students should attend at least 75% of the lessons.
