Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course covers the most important topics in the theory of economic growth (capital accumulation, technical progress, institutions and growth, etc). Especial emphasis will be put on the way growth theories have shaped development policies (and their corresponding consequences) as well as on the empirical evidence. The course will be taught at an introductory level.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Students will be evaluated on the basis of their presentations during the course and an essay (Referat).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students will develop analytical skills to think independently about the economics of growth and about the effectiveness of different economic policies.
Prüfungsstoff
Different theories will be discussed, as well as the related empirical evidence and policy debates. There will be a mix of lectures by Cuñat and presentations/discussion by the students of the material covered in the course.
Literatur
Charles Jones (2008): Introduction to Economic Growth, 2nd Edition, W.W. Norton, and William Easterly (2001): The Elusive Quest for Growth, MIT Press. We will also discuss some academic articles, mainly of empirical nature.
