Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will examine the genealogy of the Latin American discourse that questions development and proposes alternatives. We revisit ideas and concepts - some lost or forgotten over the course of time, others transformed and re-emerged in recent years.

Genuine contributions of the continent like conviviality, ethno-development, human scale development or buen vivir and Latin American feminist perspectives will be critically analyzed.

The selected texts range from an early critic in the 1960´s (Ivan Illich) to contemporary debates. All texts will be provided as pdf files. If possible, students are encouraged to read the texts in their original language (Spanish).

Learning Outcomes
• Awareness of the Latin American debate on criticism of development.
• Evaluation of the centrality of Latin American discourses in the shaping of contemporary critical scholarship on development.
• Ability to discuss the pros and cons of Latin American efforts to indigenize the critique of development.
