This course uses continuous assessment (hat immanenten Prüfungscharakter). Specifically, there are three written tests, one every unit except the first one and one other, TBA.All tests are closed book, no materials or aids are permitted (suitable exceptions can be made on request for students with a handicap).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
* Attendance is mandatory. No-shows for the first unit will have their registration revoked immediately; missing more than 1 of the 4 remaining units results in a failing grade. Tardiness may be counted as absence at the discretion of the lecturer.
* There is a strict zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism.
* More than 60 percentage points are required to pass the course (>60 → 4/D, >70 → 3/C, >80 → 2/B, >90 → 1/A), comprising three written tests (29/32/39 %).

Prüfungsstoff
Everything covered in class and/or on the e-learning platform (Moodle), including, but not limited to, the presentations/slides, textbook, vocabulary & kanji lists. All tests are cumulative and cover everything that came before.

* know some basic info about the Japanese language and writing system;
* be able to read and write hiragana and katakana with some fluency;
* have some familiarity with studying kanji (and have some 30-50 under their belt already);
* know a few basic Japanese words, phrases and short dialogues.The bulk of face time will be taken up by a series of introductory lectures and the tests (see below). Time permitting, there may also be exercises in class, but in general revision & practical application will necessarily be left to self-study (and the main courses).
