Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

As the second and third block (session 2 – 8) are text-based, students are required to prepare for each session by reading the related literature, which is available via Moodle. This will create the foundation for active participation during the seminar sessions. Expect reading about 40 pages per session, i.e., several chapters per block. Be aware of time management for this work load!
There are three assignments in total for this seminar.
• Group Presentation (25 %) – all group members receive the same grade
• Seminar paper (50 %) – individual grade
• Literature Review (25 %) – individual grade
First, students are supposed to work in groups and prepare a group presentation in which selected aspects of economics systems will be compared between two East Asian countries. This task includes the preparation and submission of handouts with the key points, and of a PPT presentation. The grade from the group presentation accounts for 25 % of the final grade and will be the same for each group member. The group presentation will be graded according to the quality of the handout, the PPT and the presentation itself.
Details on the group presentation assignment will be provided in the Exercise Course.
Deadline submission of handout and PPT (in electronic form): 06:00 on 08.01.2020.
Second, students are required to write a term paper (Seminararbeit, 10,000 words) in which they compare two countries on the basis of an analytical framework. The term paper accounts for 50 % of the final grade. Students work on this assignment individually, and thus receive an individual grade.
Third, the analytical framework for the term paper is developed from a thorough literature review. The literature review accounts for 25 % of the final grade. Students work on this assignment individually, and thus receive an individual grade.
Details including the topic, the structure, the layout and grading criteria of the term paper and the literature review will be explained to you in the Exercise Course.
Deadline literature review: 06:00 on 03.12.2019. The literature review will only be accepted in electronic form via Moodle as either a Word or OpenOffice file.
Deadline term paper: 06:00 on 01.04.2020. Term papers will only be accepted in electronic form via Moodle as either a Word or OpenOffice file.
Note: In order to pass the seminar successfully, you must submit all three assignments as listed above. The term paper is an indispensable component of the seminar. Students must have their term paper graded with at least 4.0 or else will have to repeat the seminar. Students who fail to submit a term paper will be graded with 5.0 (fail) for the whole seminar, regardless of the other assignments.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students’ presence in the sessions AND active participation in the discussions is an integral part of this course. Regular participation is thus essential. In case of absence, the following rule applies: The final grade remains unchanged for up to three absent sessions. Students who miss the session of their group presentation cannot pass this seminar. Otherwise, if students are absent in four sessions, the final grade will be reduced by one full grade. If students are absent in five sessions, the final grade will be reduced by two full grades. Students who are absent in six or more sessions will fail the whole course. Please note: Make sure to be on time for each session of the seminar! Students who are late by more than 10 minutes will not be signed in on the attendance list and count as absent.
Delay in submission of the literature review, the term paper and the group presentation is only acceptable in case of sickness, i.e., if you can provide a doctor’s certificate. Otherwise, if you don’t meet the assignments’ deadline, you cannot pass this seminar.

In the first part of the seminar, students learn about the various types of economic systems including market economies, planned economies, and market socialism from a theoretical perspective and discuss the merits of different approaches towards their classification.
In a second part, we will look at the different types of economic systems that exist in East Asia by examining several country cases individually.
In the third part, this knowledge will be applied to cases in East Asia on a comparative basis.
We will develop an understanding of the types of economic systems and especially of their various components. The focus of this seminar is on a static analysis of the status quo at a given time. The economies in East Asia are constantly changing. We therefore focus as much on short-lived empirical knowledge of the structures and sectors of East Asian economies, as we aim at developing and testing a lasting framework for their analysis.
