Turabian essay: Students will be asked to read the first chapters of a book on academic writ-ing, a total of about 140 pages. After this, students will write an essay (2,500 words) in which they reflect on the contents of what they have read in relation to their own work and re-search projects. Please note that this will not be a summary, but rather a critical discussion. The essay must be submitted electronically 24 hours before class via Moodle.
MA thesis grading exercise: In the second part, students will read and evaluate several actual MA theses that have been written as part of the EcoS program. Each thesis has to be graded numerically and verbally according to the EcoS standard (for details including a template see Moodle). The reports have to be submitted electronically 24 hours before class via Moodle. Make sure to use only the provided forms, without modifying them. During class, students will be asked to explain their evaluation. This discussion session will be held synchronously.
Topic and research question: Beginning from the first unit of the seminar, students are re-quired to think about a research topic, a research question, and the theoretical background of their MA project. The topic and research question must be submitted via Moodle 24 hours before class (one sentence each, as a PDF).
State of the Art: A profound and structured discussion of at least 20 relevant sources on the narrow topic of the thesis must be submitted electronically 24 hours before class. Please note that you should start searching and reading early, as soon as you have decided on your topic and RQ.
Late submission: A delay in submission of any assignment up to 1 week will result in down-grading by one full grade. A delay in submission of up to 2 weeks will result in downgrading by two full grades, and so forth.
To adjust the workload, we will occasionally skip single units and allot this time to the prepa-ration of the assignments. For details see the separate schedule.
Participation: Due to potential technical issues with internet connection etc., attendance will not be graded for this online course.
The final grade for the course will thus be calculated as follows:
Essay Turabian: 20%
Evaluation of MA Thesis 1: 15%
Evaluation of MA Thesis 2: 15%
Research topic, research question, relevance: 10%
Literature Review: 40%

Due to the unforeseeable nature of the Covid-19 pandemic and related restrictions, we will be unable to have regular sessions in our usual classrooms. This course will thus take place online. To participate, you need a stable internet connection, a computer with a webcam, speakers and a microphone (or a headset), and regular access to Moodle (will be granted to you automatically once you are registered for this course). Before registering for this class, make sure you meet all these requirements.
The workload will be the same as under “normal” conditions. You will have to read, you will have to submit written assignments, and you are expected to give short presentations and to participate in classroom discussions. The latter will take place online, either synchronously (you present in real time in front of a webcam) or asynchronously (you record your contribu-tion and post it online). The latter has the advantage of being independent of the quality of everybody’s internet connection and of the time zone you are living in, and is thus the pre-ferred mode.Contents
The seminar is an important step in guiding the preparation of an MA or PhD thesis in East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS). It should thus only be attended in the third or fourth semester of the MA program, or at the beginning of the PhD program. Furthermore, you should already have a topic for your thesis in mind.
In the first part of the seminar, we will have an intense discussion of principal matters regard-ing the writing of academic papers and theses. This will not be new to you and thus has the function of a structured recapitulation of existing knowledge. Most importantly, we will re-peat the key features of a State of the Art/Literature Review and of the Analytical Frame-work.
In the second part, we will apply these skills and approaches by discussing and grading previ-ously written EcoS MA theses.
In the third part, after having decided on their topic and research questions, students will prepare and present a draft State of the Art on their own topics. The seminar thus leads right into the preparation of the actual thesis.
