Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will discuss the major types of morphological phenomena and the means by which they are best characterized. We will discuss the relation between morphology and other aspects of language and will survey some influential theoretical approaches to morphological structure. The latter part of the course will concentrate on the role of morphology in language performance. Students will participate as discussion leaders for specific topics and will present two written documents. The first will be a comparison of two morphological sketches drawn from the "Handbook of Morphology". These will be contrasted both in terms of content and theoretical approach. The second document will be a substential term paper which explores one of the topics covered in the course in greater depth and with reference to primary current literature.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The goal of the course is to provide students with a solid grounding in morphological analysis and an in-depth familiarity with key morphological phenomena and problems. Our goal is to have these serve as a foundation for the major term paper in which students will be able to advance original perspectives and hypotheses.
