Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Course description:

We experience the world in a multisensual way, and this experience of the reality around us directly affects how and what we think, feel, know and create – and therefore who we are. However, the human senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch do not occupy the same place in the humanities. For centuries, the sense of sight has been the privileged one. It is only recently that the role of the other senses, not only in everyday experience but also in culture, art and media, has been more closely examined by scholars from various fields. The so-called “affective turn” in the humanities, which values the bodily aspect of an individual’s experience of the world, has contributed to the rediscovery of the role of the senses.
This course will introduce students to selected theories of affect that resonate widely in contemporary culture, and show how they can be used to study cinema and other media. The course will also examine how and why different sensory experiences were portrayed in selected media texts over time.

Aims:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
- Have developed skills in film and other media texts analysis and interpretation, in particular, regarding the depictions of the sensual experiences.
- Have developed their ability to discuss films and other media texts in a written and oral form (oral presentations, discussions, mind maps).
- Get familiarized with the selected theories of affect and the representations of sensory experiences in selected media texts.
- Have experience in critical analysis of films and other media texts using selected theoretical approaches.

Methods:

The course is taught through lectures, screenings, discussions, and set readings. Classes will consist of introductory lecture and a discussion part on films and other media texts. Individual sequences, scenes and film images will be analyzed. Set readings will be discussed. For each session, students are expected to come prepared, meaning, to read the required readings and to watch films or other audiovisual materials specified by the teacher, and participate in class discussions about the texts they read and the audiovisual materials they watched. The aim is to build students’ critical thinking skills and to show them how to analyze and interpret both affective contexts of various media texts and representations of sensual experiences depicted in them.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course evaluation will be done through:

- Assignment 1: mind map – 20%, and
- Assignment 2: podcast episode – 40%, and
- Presentation in the classroom – 40%.

Each element must be achieved. If one or more above-mentioned elements are not achieved or are assessed negatively, the overall grade cannot be positive.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

No prior subject knowledge is required to study this module. Good command of English is required.

Attendance is compulsory. A maximum of two absences is permitted in order to pass the class. A third absence will result in a fail (negative mark).

Course assessment:

Course assessment will be done through:

1) Assignment 1: mind map – 20% of the mark
- Due: 13 November 2022.
- Select one media text (film, series, TV show, etc.) and analyze what senses are shown in it (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell).
- Create a mind map of this media text that will show the different senses and their functions in the text.
- Observe what the characters of the text are looking at and why? How do they listen, what do they listen to and why? What is the role of touch? Does taste or smell play an important role?
- Illustrate your observations on the mind map in the form of short bullet points, drawings, inscriptions, photos, etc.
- Mind map can be created in digital or analog form (then you just need to take a picture of it and send it for assessment).
- Mind map must fit on one page.
- The example should be different from those we talked about in class.
- Your understanding of the role of the senses in a chosen text, the ability to communicate your own reflections, the validity of the example will be assessed.

2) Assignment 2: podcast episode – 40% of the mark
- Due: 11 December 2022
- Imagine you are the host of a podcast called “Affects in Media”. Your task for this assignment is to create a podcast episode – max. 5-minute-long audio recording – where you will briefly describe the selected concept or theory of affect, and then you will give an example of a media text that can be read from the perspective of this theory/concept.
- The selected media text can be film, series, TV show, YouTube video, etc. You need to look at this media text critically using the presented concept or theory of affect. Choose any text, but not the one we talked about in detail during the course.
- You can embed the recording into the Power Point presentation, if you wish to use some illustrative material for your audial recording, however, it is not necessary.
- Do not exceed the recording time.
- Follow the guidelines outlined above and keep your argument clear.

3) Presentation in the classroom: Multisensuality – 40% of the mark
- In the penultimate or last class, students will deliver an oral presentation that they have worked on in groups during the semester. The presentation can be made in a Power Point or similar program, but it can also be in the form of a poster. The academic poster is a one-page graphic-text form. The poster can be made and displayed in digital form; it can also take a physical form.
- The presentation must focus on the topic of “multisensuality” in a selected media text or media phenomenon.
- In the presentation, answer the following question: how do you understand multisensuality and how is it represented in the text or phenomenon you have chosen?
- For the presentation, at least one case study not discussed in details during the course, should be chosen.
- Presentations can be done individually or in pairs (depending on the number of students).
- Max. 15 minutes per presentation.
- The presentation will be assessed in terms of the quality of the content (research, argumentation) and the way it is presented (adherence to the time limit).
