Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The Philosophy of Science Colloquium has two parts: lectures delivered by guest speakers and seminar meetings. This semester the topic is the history and philosophy of algebra in the 19th Century, with a special focus on the so-called Principle of Permanence of Forms, central to the foundational debates on the nature of mathematics.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This is a discussion-based seminar, with minimal lecturing, focused on careful reading and rigorous understanding of philosophical texts.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation in discussion (15%), seminar presentation (25%), and a term paper on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor (60%). Detailed instructions for writing your paper will be given in the seminar.

All the evaluation components above are required for successfully completing this course. Only one unexcused absence is permitted.

Grading scale:
100-90 pts -- very good
89-80 pts -- good
79-66 pts -- satisfactory
