Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Essential readings and discussion thereof in class/workshop; presentation and moderation of a discussion of (an) assigned text(s) (20 per cent of the final grade); 2 response papers to given questions (30 per cent of the final grade); final paper (50 per cent of the final grade). The deadline of the final paper will be specified at the first session. The course teacher will provide a written feedback on the response as well as final papers. The deadlines to respective papers will be announced at the Vorbesprechung.

Ziele
This graduate course aims at fostering students’ ability to think critically about the present implications of biological citizenship and forms of biopower; the course will provide essential critical and methodological apparatus for analyzing the neoliberal forms of biopolitics and specifically for analysis of its gendering, disabling and racialising effects.

The backbone of the course is discussion of theoretical literature from various fields (cultural studies, history, sociology, anthropology and ethnology etc.). Nonetheless, we will also work with film(s), media representations and other material. The respective seminar sessions will be devoted to the discussion of the compulsory readings. Each text will be briefly introduced by a presenter(s) who will also prepare and lead the in-class discussion. The course will meet bi-weekly and each session will be based on 2-3 reading/study materials.

This course presents recent theoretical discussions on biopolitics and biopower and addresses issues such as: neoliberal forms of governance; governance of risk; biologisation of politics and forms of biological citizenship, and biocapital. In particular, we will draw out gender-, and disability-specific effects of the aforementioned phenomena as well as look into their global dynamic
