Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In over 70 years of European integration, the EU’s policy-making capacity has expanded and evolved. From the Single Market to environmental sustainability, what the EU does, and does not, have come to exert a growing impact on European citizens and national-level politics. In this course, we will look at how EU policies are made and what characterizes the European Union as a political system and policy-making entity. What different types of regulatory action has the EU developed through the years? What allows the EU to adopt far-reaching policies in some sectors, and what limits its policy-making capacity in other areas? Who are the main actors involved? How does the EU respond to crises? In the course we will address these questions both on a theoretical-conceptual level and by looking at the specificities of different policy areas.

At the end of the semester, after having properly engaged with the materials of the course and completed the requested deliverables, students will be knowledgeable of the different modalities of EU policy-making, how these have evolved over time, and why the EU has been able to intervene more in certain policy areas than in others.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are required to attend classes and complete the assigned readings before each session.

Evaluation for this course is divided in four parts: delivery of an individual presentation to the class; completion of a mid-semester exam; a final essay paper; participation in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Assessment for this course will be based on the following criteria:
1) Regular attendance and participation to the class discussion based on the compulsory course material (20%)
2) Completion of a mid-semester written exam on the topics addressed in the first half of the course (25%)
3) Delivery of a short presentation based on one of the assigned readings in the second half of the course (25%)
4) Submission of an essay paper at the end of the semester on a topic selected by the student from a given list (30%)
