Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this seminar, we will study the European Union’s role and influence in global politics. Applying various theoretical approaches (e.g., International Relations theory, critical social theory), and drawing on different academic literatures (e.g., foreign policy analysis, global studies, European studies), we will be looking at how the EU shapes and is shaped by other actors on the world stage, including international organisations (e.g., the UN and the WTO), regional organisations (e.g., the African Union and Mercosur), as well as global and regional powers (e.g., the USA, China, Russia). Without losing sight of 'high politics', we will also examine the EU as a 'norm setter' and a 'norm taker' in governance across key policy fields (e.g., climate, digital, health) globally. To these ends, we will consider the bigger context, that is, the so-called ‘rules-based global order’ and its perceived decline amidst increasing ‘great power competition’, the emergence of alternatives to ‘Western’ political and economic frameworks of multilateralism (e.g., BRICS+, China’s ‘Global Governance Initiative’), and the EU’s geopolitical turn.
