Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Much of sociological literature is available only in English and most sociology conferences are held in English. Therefore, it is crucial for sociologists to be able to communicate and present their work in English. By working with different texts regarding the central issues and themes of sociology, students will be able to improve their English skills.
Note: This is not a basic English course - advanced knowledge of the English language is necessary (level B2+ or Maturaniveau).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Attendance, active participation in class (keeping up to date on the readings, asking questions and participating in discussions), two small homework assignments, as well as group work (presentation and paper).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Main aims of this course are for students to gain an understanding of the most important sociological terms and phrases, as well as to practice and improve English vocabulary (general and specific) and language functions. There will be ample time for questions and discussions, putting an emphasis on practicing the language and gaining confidence with articulating thoughts in English.

Prüfungsstoff

Students will practice the discussion of sociological works in situations similar to those that they will encounter during their studies and in their future professional lives. They will read, discuss, present and write about English sociological texts.
