Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In 2017 the director of the US CDC’s National Centre for Environmental Health, Patrick Breysse, characterised PFAS contamination as “one of the most seminal public health challenges for the next decades” adding that “we think that hundreds of millions of Americans will be drinking water with levels of these chemicals above levels of concern” (Breysse quoted in: Knaus 2017).To date the spatial and temporal distribution of exposure to emerging contaminants such as PFAS has tended to reflect and exacerbate asymmetric and structural socio-economic inequalities.In this course we consider the constitution of PFAS as an object of regulatory knowledge making. Deploying conceptual tools drawn from Science and Technology Studies (STS), socio-legal studies and human geography, the course will attend to social outcomes of PFAS regulation.
