Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This hands-on course offers an application-oriented introduction to the techniques of demographic analysis. Participants gain an overview of available national and international data sources that can be used study social change along cohort lines. Using Microsoft Excel ( in some topics R), the key concepts and measures of cohort analysis will be derived and explained.

The course does not require pre-existing knowledge of Excel or R. A basic introduction to the R software and Spreadsheet techniques will be given at the beginning of the course.

After completing this course, students should be able to conduct simple analyses related to questions around social change using suitable data.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

(1) Depending on the number of participants, a single or group presentation about one specific course area (to be identified in class). Relevant literature will be provided.

(2) Submission of a written assignment on another course topic (different from the oral presentation).
(3) Final Exam
(4) Classroom participation, including particpation in debate sessions following oral presentations.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Participation is obligatory and will be checked. Students may miss at most one class.

In addition to participation, grades will be based on the oral presentation, written assignemnt and the final exam.

All Four requirements have to be fulfilled for positive evaluation.
