Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will examine the linkage between (critical) geopolitics and development. After analyzing classical/imperialist geopolitics (Mackinder, Haushofer and others) we will focus on a major topic of geopolitics relevant to the Global south: development. With the help of Global South Theories (e.g. dependency theory, anti- and postcolonial theories; critical geopolitics) we will apply the theoretical debates in geopolitics and development to two case studies:
China´s Engagement with African Development - Power M. & .Mohan G. (2010)
Geopolitics and Feminism (cases from Guatemala and India) - Casolo J. & Sapana D. (2013)

Learning Outcomes
• Awareness of the rich heritage and variety of critical engagement with geopolitical thought and development in the Global South.
• Evaluation and understanding of the intersection between Geopolitics and Development.
• Ability to apply critically the theoretical reflections to two case studies

Final essay (5-6 Pages) 40%

Grading Scale:
1 = 87-100 % excellent (outstanding performance)
2 = 75-86 % good (generally good, but with some errors)
3 = 63-74 % satisfactory (generally sound work with a number of substantial errors)
4 = 50-62 % sufficient (performance meets the minimum criteria)
5 = 0 – 49 % unsatisfactory
