Salt rocks display fascinating and dynamic behavior in the Earth’s crust, spectacularly expressed by flowing salt glaciers and rising salt fountains in the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt. Their morphology, internal structures, and spreading dynamics provide a unique window into the long-term rheological behavior of salt and its fundamental role in shaping deformation within accretionary wedges. This course explores on salt tectonics and how salt tectonics and extrusive diapirs can serve as natural analogues for understanding large-scale geodynamic systems, including hot orogens and magmatic plumbing systems. By drawing parallels between salt flow, deformation of partially molten rocks, and magma transport, the course highlights the universal principles of gravity-driven and tectonically controlled mass flow that govern deformation processes across the Earth’s crust.
