Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Please note: all students MUST bring a laptop (and power cable!) for each class (weekly) for the practical parts of this course. If you are not able to use you own laptop during the class please inform the instructors before the start of the course.

The students will learn the theory and practical application of a diverse set of statistical methods that are necessary for quantitative studies in palaeobiology and other Earth sciences. Guidelines for selection of data formats and methods appropriate for different types of analyses will be provided. This understanding is critical when planning and designing research projects. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of different methods will be explained. The methods will be taught through the use of worked examples and practice data sets derived mainly from paleontology and geological sciences. The practical part of the course will cover fundamental aspects of analysis and visualization of univariate and multivariate data in R (no previous R skills are required). Course materials will be available online on Moodle.

The course starts on 1st October 2024 at home. Then for every slot after this it is in person, so please bring a laptop and power cable. The three assignments for the Übung will be scheduled during the course depending on speed of progress. The written exam is to be held in January 2024.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Over the semester students will complete three assignments focusing on the practical aspects of data analysis (Übung). At the end of the course, there will be one written exam for the theoretical (lecture/Vorlesung) part, and the pass mark is 50%.
All parts must be passed to complete the course and gain the course credits.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Handing in practical assignments, active participation and regular attendance (a minimum of 80% of the classes) are required, as is passing (minimum 50%) both the theoretical (lecture/Vorlesung) and practical (Übung) parts of the course.

There is an initial questionnaire (anonymous and not graded) to evaluate the level of understanding of the statistics by the students prior to the start of the course. This helps us plan the right level for the course.

Prüfungsstoff

Content of the lectures, practical assignments and active participation throughout the course.

Literatur

All reading materials will be uploaded to Moodle.
