Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will present mathematical models for describing how materials move through systems such as rivers, lakes, the atmosphere, populations and other systems relevant to environmental scientists and engineers. The course will cover the use of simple, ideal "reactors" to describe these systems and the inclusion of generic expressions for reactions such as biodegradation, hydrolysis, and photocatalysis as well as expressions for adsorption and population growth. Advective and diffusive transport phenomena will be discussed. Principles of mass balances will be extended to consider balances on momentum as the basis for describing fluid motion describing mass flux for simple geometries of spheres, cylinders, and flat plates to represent diverse environmental systems.
Topics Covered:
Mass balance
Reaction kinetics
Reactor engineering
Plug flow
River modeling
Lake modeling
Atmospheric modeling
Population modeling
Continuity equation
Momentum balances for fluids (Navier-Stokes Equations)
Advective-Diffusion equation
Expressions for Mass Flux to and from surfaces.
