Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students will learn key factors that control the environmental fate of organic pollutants. We will discuss the concepts of phase transfer and chemical transformation. Key classes of organic pollutants, as well as their sources, hazards, and predominant sinks will be discussed. Students will learn to describe the substance specific behavior of relevant organic pollutants and selected analytical techniques to investigate the fate of organic pollutants in the environment. The course will be a mix of lectures, self-study, exercises, and student presentations.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

A maximum of 60 points can be earned through exercises, an oral presentation, and a written exam.

1) Exercises (30 points total): Six take-home exercises each worth 5 points. Further details will be announced via Moodle.

2) Group presentations (15 points, 20 min): Will take place on 11.06.2026 and 12.06.2026. Participation and presence on both dates is mandatory.

3) In-class exam (15 points, 90 min): Will take place on 18.06.2026. No materials except a simple calculator are allowed. Exam will not be repeated (PI) since it is not mandatory to pass the course.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance is mandatory on 11.06.2026 and 12.06.2026 for all groups presentations and subsequent discussions.

A maximum of 60 points can be earned in this course (30 points from exercises, 15 points from the presentation, 15 points from the exam). At least 50% of the total points (30 points) must be achieved to pass.

The following grading scheme will be applied:
> 87% (1); 75-87 % (2); 63-74 % (3); 50-62 % (4); < 50 % (5)

Students know key factors that control the environmental fate of organic pollutants. Students are familiar with the concepts of phase transfer and chemical transformation. Students can name key classes of organic pollutants, as well as their sources, hazards, and predominant sinks. Students can describe the substance specific behavior of relevant organic pollutants and selected analytical techniques to investigate the fate of organic pollutants in the environment.

The teaching material (videos and slides of all teaching units including the literature mentioned therein) will be provided on Moodle.
