**IMPORTANT NOTE** The development of Covid-19 during the upcoming semester cannot be foreseen at the moment. If new restrictions are introduced, the planned lecture schedule, the administration of exams and the mode of evaluation may have to be adapted. Students will be informed as soon as possible about any changes that may become necessary. The course provides an introduction to the most important mesoscale weather phenomena, emphasizing their quantitative description aided by simplifications of the governing equations, and focussing mostly on midlatitude processes. Topics include: Basic equations and their approximations; Gravity waves; Mesoscale instabilities; Airmass boundaries; Deep moist convection.
