Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar encompasses the weekly meeting of the "Dynamics of Stellar Systems" research group at the Department of Astrophysics: https://www.univie.ac.at/dynamics/

The focus is on understanding the dynamical structure and evolution of stellar systems. In nearby galaxies and stellar clusters, the 'fossil records' of their formation are uncovered by constructing realistic dynamical models that fit their photometric and spectroscopic observations in detail. The latter include integral-field spectroscopy, observed motions and properties of individual stars, as well as (strong) gravitational lensing observations.

Participants discuss recent scientific developments in this field of astrophysics in the form of reviews of publications (a.k.a. journal club), feedback from related international meetings, as well as informal presentations by participants.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The assessment will be based on active participation to discussions and contributions in the form of informal presentations about related topics or research projects.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The meetings are in English. It is recommended that you have completed the second-semester course ‘Extragalactic Astronomy’ as background though highly motivated MSc students in their first year are also welcome. A minimum participation of 75% is required as well as at least one informal presentation.

Prüfungsstoff

Theoretical and observational advances in "Dynamics of Stellar Systems".

Literatur

Potential reading materials will be suggested in the meeting announcements.
