IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
This course is equivalent to "300401 VU Statistics course based on R" in the summer term - both have exactly the same content!
It is only possible for students to complete one of these two courses, either in the winter term (300131) or the summer term (300401).
Completing both courses results in deletion of the first course from the study record.

This course is included in a mandatory module in the Master Cognition, Behavior and Neurobiology (878).
Therefore, students from this master will be prioritized by the system!

First meeting (Vorbesprechung) on Monday 06.10.2025, 09:30 – 10:30 Seminar room 5.1, Biologie Djerassiplatz 1, 5.131, Ebene 5

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students are introduced to the free software environment R ( https://www.r-project.org ) and how to perform statistical analyses using R. Each unit includes theory and practice: different statistical methods are presented and can be applied by the students to analyze provided datasets.

It is strongly recommended to bring a LAPTOP to the course, but working in groups of two using one laptop is also possible.

R is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux (for more information visit: https://www.r-project.org ).

Based on the learned methods and by gaining a general understanding for R, students should be able to perform their own statistical analyses for their master or PhD thesis, but also to further familiarize with R and other (statistical) methods.

Included topics: Statistical basics, installation of R and fundamentals, simple graphics, basic statistical tests (e.g., Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene’s test, t-test, U-test, ANOVA, Chi-squared test, correlations), linear models (2-way ANOVA, multiple regression, ANCOVA), linear mixed models, generalized linear (mixed) models (e.g., for count, proportion, or binary data), and further selected methods.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

- Intermediate tests (multiple-choice tests and statistical analyses in R): 10.11.2025, 09:30 + 12.01.2026, 09:30
- Final exam (statistical analyses in R): 26.01.2025, 09:30

In case of a negative assessment of the course, the final exam can be taken again on 23.02.2025, 09:30.

For all statistical analyses that have to be done, it is allowed to use the materials provided in the course.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

- 2 intermediate tests: max. 50 points
- Final exam: max. 50 points

87 – 100 points: Very good (1)
