Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

** Masterseminar MEC-9 **

This course is intended for master’s students seeking orientation in the fields of soil microbial ecology or terrestrial ecosystem research, as well as for those who are working on, or about to begin, their master’s thesis in these areas.

The aim of this course is to explore and critically assess recently published studies that address advanced topics in microbial ecology and the biogeochemistry of soils and other parts of terrestrial ecosystems.
In addition, students will develop skills in effectively communicating their master’s thesis projects. This includes summarizing the current state of research in their respective fields, structuring research goals, questions, and hypotheses, and critically discussing their chosen methodology.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

+ Oral presentation of a scientific paper/review article and/or of the master’s project
+ Active participation in all discussions (requires reading of all papers presented)
+ Written reflection on the presentation of a fellow student from the seminar (approx. 2 pages; freely chosen)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance and active participation in at least 75% of all course sessions is mandatory.

Grading will be based on the following components:
+ Oral presentation (60%)
+ Active participation in discussions (20%)
+ Written reflection (20%)
All three components must be completed in order to successfully pass the seminar.

Prüfungsstoff

There will be no final exam.

Literatur

Primary literature will be selected in the preliminary meeting and made available via Moodle.
