Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Did you know that around 45% of atmospherically oxygen is produced by algae? This exercise offers insights into the fascinating world of algae, a group which is significantly involved in global flow patterns. Major algae groups will be discussed and important representatives will be introduced. We will sample from various habitats, use light and also scanning electron microscopes for studying specimens. Additionally, measurements of some environmental variables, microphotography, use of appropriate computer programs will be taught. Language will be either German or English according to requirements.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Basic knowledge of the most important algal groups and some characteristic representatives, use of algal identification keys, introduction into algae preparation, practical experiences in presentation

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

- seminar talk (20 %)- Student activity (30 %)- lab protocol (10 %)- team poster (40 %). All partial performances must be positive to finish the course. Passed with more than 60% positive overall performance. In total 100 points, 91-100 = 1, 81-90 = 2, 71-80 = 3, 60-70 = 4, <60 = 5.

Prüfungsstoff

Taught contents and activities, basic knowledge of major algal groups and characteristics essential for identification.
