Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Practical linux use: Obtaining software, command line exection, bash scripts.

Programming: Types of programming languages & getting the materials (programming environment and documentation). Programming basics: data types, assignments, flow control, functions and procedures, debugging. Sorting and searching. Finding and using existing programming libraries. Automating external programmes and web services, and parsing results.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Solutions to exercises are handed in at the start of each day, and grading is based on the completion of exercises and the final project.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

After the course, the students will know principles and techniques for construction of simple programs to computationally analyse biological data, using a common scripting programming language. The participants will have practical experience with implementation of text processing and parsing as well as communication with external programs from within a common scripting programming language. The method of work at the course will also train the participants to plan and complete projects.

Prüfungsstoff

The course will be in the form of short lectures, followed by longer individual exercises. A larger applied exercise/project is given at the end of the course.
