Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

OBJECTIVE

To become aware of writing strategies, rhetorical strategies and stylistic tools and their impact on the reader/listener. Students should be able to develop their own style in dealing with different subject-matter and types of texts (in both oral and written form).

CONTENT

Using a variety of written texts (including practical examples from a translator's desk) as well as recordings of spoken language (e.g. interviews, podcasts etc) we will analyse them and look at what makes them interesting and effective - or not.
METHODS

Weekly reading and listening assignments. There will also be individual and group presentations.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance is mandatory (only one absence allowed)
Assessment will be based on the following:
- 1 mid-term test (30%)
- 1 final test (30%)
- Written and oral individual assignments (20%)
- Participation in class (20%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

- Excellent knowledge of working languages
- High quality text production and presentation

Prüfungsstoff

It is expected that students can apply the theoretical input, as well as methods and strategies discussed in class to new assignments, text types and genres.
