Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

To become aware of different types of texts and their requirements with special attention given to various text functions and types, media, target groups, writing processes, revision and argumentation. Students should be able to improve and further develop their comprehension, writing, speaking and presentation skills in dealing with different subject matters and types of texts.
To achieve these objectives, we will look at and work with different types of texts (written, audio and audiovisual), formats and genres in reading and listening activities, writing assignments and presentations.
There will be weekly assignments, prepared individually and in groups.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be based on the following:
- 1 mid-term test (30%)
- 1 end-of-term test (30%)
- Written and oral assignments (20%)
- Participation in class (20%)
60% of the above are required for a passing grade at the end of the semester.

No materials or electronic devices are permitted for the tests.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

An advanced level of both oral and written English is required.
Students must complete all assignments.
Regular attendance is mandatory – two absences allowed.
Grading scale: 90-100%: 1. // 80-89%: 2 // 70-79%: 3 // 60-69%: 4 // < 60%: 5 (fail)

Prüfungsstoff

The tests will be based on the assignments and work in class.
Students will achieve the course objectives by
- analysing and assessing a variety of texts (in individual/group projects);
- writing, adapting/rewriting and optimising texts for various situations, target groups and media;
- reflecting on and discussing various steps in the text production process;
- incorporating theoretical input given in class in their assignments and applying strategies and methods accordingly.
