Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Prüfungsstoff
Through practical exercises, language practice, role-plays, and input from
the trainer, participants will be encouraged to:
(1) increase their awareness of "academic identity", how it is created, conveyed, and the impact it has on others
(2) gain an insight into the subtleties of verbal and non-verbal communication
(3) build on and practice the useful phrases and grammar of English small talk
(4) develop (linguistic) strategies for handling specific situations, e.g. opening and closing a conversation, creating rapport, building on potentially interesting/ useful contacts, following up a first meeting, etc.
(5) assess their own small talk strengths and weaknesses and try out new/ more successful communication strategies where appropriate
(6) gain a sensitivity to issues of politeness in the English language
(7) practice telling anecdotes and stories in English
(8) develop confidence and enjoyment in socializing and networking

This 2 day seminar provides the opportunity for young academics to develop an awareness of their "academic identity", whilst practicing the skills and language of English small talk and networking.
