980033 TS English Pronunciation and Typical Mistakes (2020W)

This seminar aims at helping participants to make their English sound more authentic and avoid typical pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes by taking a closer look at typical non-native speaker mistakes in these two areas. We will explore and practice problem sounds (v/w, th etc.) and sound sequences (-ction, -able etc.) as well as homographs (words with one spelling but different pronunciations for different meanings or grammatical functions). The second part of the seminar will focus on 'false friends' (e.g. actual vs. aktuell), i.e. words that look like they might mean the same in both languages but do not. Finally, we will also address problems of literally translating German sentences into English.
