Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Attendance during the first lesson is required (for admission to the course, allocation of remaining places if necessary, group assignment, and assignment of presentation topics). Participants are encouraged to participate, discuss, and share their ideas. Two excused absences are permitted. Multiple absences without a valid reason will result in a negative grade. Due to its design, the course cannot be held in a hybrid format.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Regular attendance, presentations, and seminar papers are required; further information will be provided on Moodle. Minimum requirements are a successful presentation and a seminar paper that meets academic standards. Minimum attendance: 80%.
To receive a positive grade, you must complete your seminar paper according to the course instructor's specifications, give a presentation, and actively participate. Examinations: 50% seminar paper, 25% presentation, 25% active participation in discussions.
To ensure your performance is assessed appropriately and fairly, both the grading scheme for seminar papers and the study objectives defined in the preliminary discussion of the seminar will be defined in advance as reference points and made available to you. The degree to which these defined requirements are met will determine the final grade.
The seminar paper must be submitted via Moodle by March 31, 2026. If this partial assessment is graded negatively, and thus the assessment of the entire course is negative, you will be given an opportunity to improve it. You will receive feedback with criteria you must meet for the partial performance to be assessed positively. You must meet these criteria by resubmitting the improved partial performance via Moodle by July 15, 2026. If you miss the deadlines or fail to meet the criteria, you will receive a negative grade.

But what does the practice of worship in German-speaking countries actually look like in the prism of liturgical law? How is the tension between a specific liturgical practice and the universally or partially ecclesiastically binding guidelines? After all, Catholics around the world today celebrate their faith in the liturgy in different languages, cultures and societies, which is primarily regulated by the liturgical books.
However, liturgy is always only living liturgy (no rubricism) and is ideally prepared and celebrated responsibly (bishops, priests, deacons, pastoral assistants, parish workers, etc.). As a lex orandi, the liturgy unites Christians of all generations, societies, epochs and countries, but is also inseparably linked to the faith of the universal Church (of all times) as a lex credendi.
How comprehensively is worship regulated? Insights from different perspectives can open up fields of action at a pastoral level as to how the tension can be integrated on the one hand and maintained on the other in a theologically reflective and pastorally responsible manner.
Which high prayers are in use or are newly composed? Are parts of the Ordo Missae omitted and/or changed? Is the altar misunderstood as a repository for all kinds of utensils? Does the priest wear the intended liturgical vestments? Who delivers the homily? How morally instructive are the intercessions? How complete is the order of readings? Is there a foot washing on Maundy Thursday? Is communion celebrated on Good Friday? How many and which readings are read at the Easter Vigil? These and many other examples from theory and practice will be discussed.
