Systematic theological concepts always belong to their time; their timelessness or transience is fictitious. At the same time, it is easy to see that concepts diverged drastically within the same time contexts and their questions. Systematic theological concepts therefore often form divergent, pluralistic focal points. Using a number of such models from the past eight centuries, the course will examine the legitimacy as well as the limitations of these models and explore them in relation to contemporary, sincere, free research and reason-based systematic theology.Contents:
Systematic theological drafts by the following authors will be examined and discussed:
- Thomas Aquinas – William of Ockham
- Anton Günther – Johann Evangelist Kuhn
- Erich Przywara – Karl Barth
- Hans Urs von Balthasar – Johann Baptist Metz
- Eberhard Jüngel – Friedrich Wilhelm MarquardtMethod:
The course will be held in blocks during the first half of the semester in order to enable a critical encounter and discussion of two drafts in each double unit.
To this end, a 20-minute presentation of a systematic theological draft is expected; the presentation should outline the essential systematic theological motifs and their interrelationships and raise a few central questions relating to the draft in terms of its conception and its relevance for the past and present.
