Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar focuses on the churches of Ukraine and aims to explore their historical and cultural dimensions. Above all, it centers on current developments and debates:
the churches and Russia's war, intra-Orthodox conflicts, and the relationship between the state and the churches. In addition to working with sources and literature, the seminar will also include encounters with representatives of Ukrainian Christianity (online and in person).

Assessment and permitted materials

Reading the texts or materials uploaded to Moodle for the respective seminar session
Regular active participation in the seminar sessions
Presentation-based report and discussion leadership after the report
Seminar paper (25,000 to 30,000 characters) according to the formal criteria customary at the faculty.
All work must be done independently; this is possible in English and German. The use of AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Google Bard) is permitted (only) for auxiliary tasks (e.g., literature research, searching for definitions, creating working translations, proofreading).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Active participation 20%, presentation 20%, developing a research question for the seminar paper: 10%; writing the seminar paper 50%. The seminar paper will be checked for plagiarism using software. In the event of suspected non-transparent use of AI (e.g., through citation or indication of the type of use), the course instructor reserves the right to conduct a “grade-relevant discussion”/“plausibility check.”
Attendance at all sessions, with one unexcused absence tolerated.
The deadline for submitting the seminar paper is August 31, 2026.
The final grade is calculated as the average of the weighted individual performances, whereby each individual performance must be positive.

Examination topics

The seminar is a course with continuous assessment.
