Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
What problems will humans face in the future? The seminar would like to pursue this question and take older and more recent films in the context of technology ethics, robot ethics and human enhancement as an opportunity to work out basic statements about the human being that appear central in the films. In doing so, tensions between being created vs. being made, the importance of personal history and of feelings and reliability; dealing with the need to die and the control over machines and humans; perspectives of meaning and religious faith in the face of the obvious limits of what is possible will become recognizable. The film statements are to be compared with current developments. The guiding question is which ethical forms of argumentation as well as fundamental theological and philosophical approaches to meaning can be helpful in shaping a good future.
Assessment and permitted materials
For a positive assessment, a seminar paper (12 pages of text plus cover sheet and table of contents and bibliography, in case of group work longer seminar paper, i.e. 9 pages per person plus cover sheet, table of contents and bibliography) or a seminar portfolio (15-20 pages) according to usual scientific standards has to be handed in. Furthermore, regular attendance is required (two excused absences without giving reasons are possible, absences in excess of this can be compensated with an agreed additional performance) as well as participation in the individual seminar sessions including a presentation or a similar seminar activity.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Papers must elaborate on the ethical problem and refer to current ethical literature. A model for the evaluation of term papers will be provided as a guide for the preparation of term papers. A clear presentation of the ethical problem is expected, as well as a critical examination of the theories worked on.
Examination topics
For papers and seminar papers, a corresponding research of current scientific literature on the chosen paper or seminar paper topic is expected.
