MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 75% presence; preparation and implementation of one unit; written seminar paper (deadline Sept. 30th, 2018).

The seminar is about understanding some of the major motivations and legitimations of violence in the three monotheistic religions, both in the individual and in the political sphere. A fundamental-theological consideration is to be tested: the pacifying importance of the infinite difference between God and man; this means that whenever it comes to identifications of institutions or persons with God or immediate divine claims, religious violence is at hand.
TOPICS:
The seminar has two main parts:
- Violence and abuse: institutional violence and violence in religious educational institutions; relevance of rituals; abuse and resistance.
- Violence and political terror: significance of rhetoric and reflection; violence and pacification in the Abrahamic religions; religious cooperation practice.
METHOD: Theological inputs through short presentations by students; theological discussion.
