Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We are familiar with satire from social media, film, and television. Satire entertains us. It puts its finger on the sore spot of socio-political misdevelopments. However, it is not always understood and often crosses the boundaries of what is permissible.
From a philosophical and scientific point of view, satire is a complex and demanding genre. In this seminar, we will discuss philosophical, literary, and other theoretical perspectives on satire and analyze current examples with this knowledge. The main focus is on media ethics: What role does satire play in public communication, where are the limits of this form of representation, is there a specific satirical competence, what can satire do that other forms of representation cannot, etc.
The aim of the seminar is to enable students to recognize and understand (media) satire and to deal with it in a practical-philosophical and scientific-empirical way.
