Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The term "Eastern Churches" is used in this course in a broad sense: While the focus is on the Eastern Catholic Churches, the position of Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches is also addressed. The focus is on both legal-historical and applicable legal considerations.
Students will be familiarized with the following key topics in particular:
- The Crusades of the Middle Ages and the emergence of Eastern Catholic Churches;
- Early modern union agreements (Brest-Litovsk 1596; Uzhorod 1646, among others);
- The legal status of Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches in the territory of the Danube Monarchy;
- Key differences between the Codex Iuris Canonici 1983 and the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium 1990;
- The Concordat of 1933/34 and the legal status of Eastern Catholic Churches in Austria;
- Current conflict situations in Ukraine: Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Orthodox Church(es).

Assessment and permitted materials

Compulsory attendance, participation, 20-minute presentation preceded by the submission of a two to four-page handout. A written paper must also be completed by those students who complete this seminar as a diploma or dissertation candidate.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

See above. Students who clearly do not meet the attendance requirement or are not fully present in the first course unit without an excuse will be deregistered by us. If there are minor absences, we may arrange for an additional oral colloquium.

Examination topics

This primarily depends on the topic of the presentation.

Reading list

You will be able to get started with the literature with a seminar document, the updated versions of which will be made available to you on the MOODLE platform after the preliminary discussion.
However, independent literature research is an essential part of the seminar and is included in the final grade.
