Aims, contents and method of the course

The course offers an introduction to the Philosophy of Law. On the one hand, it addresses the question of what "law" actually is. On the other hand, it deals with the question of whether law is just and on the basis of which criteria one can speak of a "just law". In doing so, he addresses the conditions for the validity of law, the relationship between law and morality, and the relationship between positive law and justice, and discusses these topics using practical examples such as civil disobedience against climate change. Special attention is given to the legitimacy of law and the state, highlighting the role of human rights as fundamental points of reference. Finally, the course looks at the justification of human rights, the question of their universal validity and current challenges, such as those posed by European refugee policy.

Oral participation in the form of a discussion leader,
3-page reflection paper and
Final exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Coherent presentation of issues in the context of the reflection paper.
Reproduction of material within the framework of the examination.
