Aims, contents and method of the course
The course starts on 17. March and ends on 29. May 2026. The course offers an Introduction to legal methodology and to the work on legal cases in Criminal Law. The course covers the Allgemeiner Teil and the Besonderer Teil I of the criminal law. Attendance is compulsory during the whole course; you may be absent once.
Assessment and permitted materials
One written exam and regular oral participation.
The written exam will take place (jointly for all APÜs - Constitutional Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law) on 22. May 2026. If required, the exam can be repeated on May 29th 2026 (if the first exam was not passed or if proof of justified absence is presented).
Permitted material: Unannotated editions of relevant statutes, handwritten annotations are not permitted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Attendance of the first unit is compulsory, non-attending students will lose their place in the course. For oral participation in each unit, a (+) will be awarded. A positive assessment of the course requires a successful pass of the written exam and active oral participation (minimum: two (+)). If the student does not withdraw from the course in time, the course will be assessed negatively according to the statutes of the University of Vienna, even if no written exam was taken.
Examination topics
In each unit, cases will be provided in advance via moodle as a basis for discussions. Students will have to prepare these cases. For a successful completion of the course, it is strongly advisable to study the recommended literature in advance and to prepare the cases provided for the respective unit.
