Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will be held – with the exception of the preliminary meeting in March – as a block seminar in June.

The seminar will be focused on national, European, as well as international Supreme Court rulings (VfGH, VwGH, EuGH, EGMR, US Supreme Court…) concerning technological and social innovations. In the preliminary meeting, the court rulings are selected together and then roles are assigned in preparation for the blocked units: for each court ruling, one person presents the facts, the legal situation and the legal question(s); one person prepares arguments for and one person against the court’s decision. Each case must be read by everyone, as those who do not take on a role will act as voting judges in the block units. Depending on the number of participants, one person may take on several roles for different cases.

Optionally, a seminar paper on the court ruling can be submitted in German or English by the end of July. Basic knowledge of both languages is required for a lively discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Preparation for the respective role in the presentation of the court rulings, active participation in the discussion.

Optional: writing a seminar paper in accordance with the rules of good scientific practice. AI tools may be used, provided their use is documented accordingly.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is mandatory. All court rulings must be read in advance; a role must be prepared. Active participation in the discussion is required for a positive assessment.

If a seminar paper is written, it must be at least 20 pages (approximately 50,000 characters, max. 55,000 characters) long.

Examination topics
