Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The names of those who contributed to the republican tradition reads like a lineup of the major celebrities of political thought: Aristotle, Polybios, Cicero, Machiavelli, Sidney, Harrington, Milton, Montesquieu, Madison, Rousseau and, more recently, Hannah Arendt, Philip Pettit or John McCormick. What they share is the endorsement of collective self-determination and the concern with freedom, independence and a modicum of citizen virtue. Arguably, the foundations of modern constitutional democracy have its root in this tradition.
The seminar would like to look as some of its most prominent exponents.
