Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The European Law Moot Court Training Course will introduce students to writing, presenting and negotiating key questions of European law. Based on the European Law Moot Court, the oldest EU law moot court, students will work in teams to solve the case set before them. In the winter semester of 2026, the focus will be on the written part of the official ELMC case. In the summer semester, the emphasis will shift to the oral part. Students will be divided into teams and will work on specific sub-issues of the case.

The ELMC case 2026/27, which will be published at the beginning of September 2026, forms the basis of the course. During the kick off meeting at the beginning of October, students will form groups and choose which question of the case they want to answer. Each group will answer all three questions and hand in a paper by the end of November 2026. It will subsequently be discussed individually with the instructors and further developed during the remainder of the Winter Semester. The final version must be submitted by the end of the semester.

The course will be offered as a continuation in the Summer Semester 2027 and will focus on the oral pleadings. A separate course registration is required. In the allocation of places, preference will be given to students who have successfully completed the course in the Winter Semester 2026/27. Oral pleadings (additional course SS 2027) may be conducted in English or, upon prior agreement, in French.
Teaching methods include lectures, guided discussions, legal research, team-based legal drafting, analysis of the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, individual supervision, written legal argumentation and oral pleadings.
As the University of Vienna will host the European Law Moot Court Regional Final (February 2027), students will have the opportunity to attend the oral pleadings and observe an international moot court competition first-hand. Students may also volunteer to support the organisation of the Regional Final and interact with international competitors, judges, coaches and members of the European Law Moot Court Society. Exceptional engagement may be positively contribute to the participation component of the final grade.

The selection of participants will be made in accordance with § 2(2) of the Regulation of the Director of Studies 3 on the Allocation of Places in Courses with Limited Participant Numbers: https://mtbl.univie.ac.at/storage/media/mtbl02/2021_2022/2021_2022_385.pdf.
