Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment in this course includes the presentation of research findings (Winter 2025), submission of a research paper (Summer 2026), as well as participation and contribution during the main teaching days.
Attendance of all sessions (online and in person) is mandatory. Students may only withdraw from the course until 14 October 2025.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Grading criteria are set out in the full course outline and will be explained to students during the teaching days. The course outline will be emailed to applicants in September 2025.
Examination topics
Students participating in this course can choose their research topic from a list of topics set out in the full syllabus. This list includes a range topics that examine criminological, international and domestic substantive law and procedural aspects. Students are required to present their research findings in class during the course days in February 2026 and submit a written, fully referenced research paper in early May 2026.The 2025–2026 Transnational Organised Crime programme broadly explores the structure and organisation or organised criminal groups. This involves the background, evolution, and history of selected groups, their leaders and other members, their hierarchies, networks, and associations, and the many myths that surround organised criminal group. The list of available research topic will be made available to students in September 2025.

In 2025-2026 the focus is on Organised Criminal Groups: Models, Members, and Myths. The course is designed for students to conduct independent, guided research in an international context and to equip students with advanced research, communication, presentation, and writing skills, specifically in this field of study.
The seminar comprises 8 ECTS: Part I (Winter 2025, 4 ECTS) involves the research and project presentation; part 2 (Summer 2026, ECTS) involves the written research paper.

This course is not open to Erasmus and exchange students at the University of Vienna.
University of Vienna students will receive a subsidy for travel to Cologne for the main teaching days.Students interested in undertaking this course shoukd initially register for this course online. They will then receive further information and a registration form, also to facilitate the allocation of research topics. The form should returned by email to andreas.schloenhardt@univie.ac.at before 28 September 2025, 9:00am. In order to make an informed decision, students should take at least a cursory look (online) at the available research topics. Preferences may be change during the planning meeting. Formal enrolment in the course will occur exclusively in the planning meeting.
