Aims, contents and method of the course

This course, which is offered in conjunction with the Universities of Zurich, Queensland, Cologne, and Ferrara and extends over two semesters, explores selected topics relating to transnational organised crime.
In 2026-2027 the focus is on Organised Crime and the Environment. The course is designed for students to conduct independent, guided research in an international context and to equip students with advanced research, communication, presentation, and writing skills, specifically in this field of study.
The seminar comprises 8 ECTS: Part I (Winter 2026, 4 ECTS) involves the research and project presentation; part 2 (Summer 2027, ECTS) involves the written research paper.

This course is not open to Erasmus and exchange students at the University of Vienna.

Students interested in undertaking this course shoulkd initially register for this course online. They will then receive further information and a registration form, also to facilitate the allocation of research topics. The form should returned by email to andreas.schloenhardt@univie.ac.at before 17 September 2026, 9:00am. In order to make an informed decision, students should take at least a cursory look (online) at the available research topics. Preferences may be changed during the planning meeting. Formal enrolment in the course will occur after the information session.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment in this course includes the presentation of research findings (Winter 2026), submission of a research paper (Summer 2027), as well as participation and contribution during the main teaching days.
Attendance of all sessions (online and in person) is mandatory.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in this course is by application and selection only.
Grading criteria are set out in the full course outline and will be explained to students during the teaching days. The course outline will be emailed to applicants in September 2026.
