Aims, contents and method of the course

This course provides an introduction to the principles, offences, and defences of Austrian criminal law. It covers the main sources of criminal law in Austria, elements and extensions of criminal liability, and a selection of offences against the person, offences relating to property, and defences. The course is designed for 'IReWi' students at the University of Vienna and students who have undertaken criminal law course at universities abroad. The course is not suitable for students undertaking the standard law degree and/or preparing for criminal law exams at the University of Vienna.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment involves three separate components, all will be undertaken in class and in person. (1) online test covering sources, subjects, elements, and extensions of criminal liability (15 mins, 30 November 2026, c. 3:30pm, 30% of final grade), (2) online test covering all content of the course (30mins, 11 January 2026, 3pm, 60% of final grade), (3) participation and seminar exercises (all course days, 10% of final grade). The online test will be closed book though copies of Austrian criminal law statutes may be used and will be made available.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

All three pieces of assessment must be attempted. To pass this course, students must achieve an overall score of 50 marks/percent.
Grade 1 (Sehr Gut): 100-87
Grade 2 (Gut): 75-86
Grade 3 (Befriedigend): 63-74
Grade 4 (Genügende): 50-62
Grade 5 (Fail): 49-0

Online test 2 covers all content of the course .
