Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will examine significant ecclesiastical trials of the modern era. It will also examine trials that related to ecclesiastical circumstances but also took place under secular or state authority. It will provide an overview of the origins of the Spanish and Roman Inquisitions, as well as a presentation of the Index of Forbidden Books. Furthermore, the structures of "witch trials" will be analyzed, highlighting, in particular, differences compared to the Middle Ages. Among other things, the trial of Michael Servet in Geneva, the procedural events directed against Giordano Bruno, and the trials against Galileo Galilei will be examined in detail.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence, Participation, voluntary interim colloquium during the semester and obligatory colloquium at the end of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grading calculation is roughly based on the following criteria: colloquium grade (counts for about two thirds), participation (counts for about a third).

Examination topics

The material for the final colloquium consists exclusively of the two scripts that will be posted on the Moodle platform over the course of the semester.

Reading list

There are numerous references to literature in both scripts. The referenced literature is not, as such, colloquial material, but can prove to be quite interesting for students.
