Aims, contents and method of the course

The legal standing of religious communities in Austria will be examined. Therefore a comparative analysis of the Concordate 1933/34 and its additional agreements, the Federal Law on External Legal Relationships of the Protestant Church in Austria (Protestantengesetz 1961), the Federal Act on External Legal Relationships of the Greek-Oriental Church in Austria (Orthodoxengesetz 1967), the Act on External Legal Relationships of the Israelite Religious Society as amended in 2012 (Israelitengesetz in der Fassung von 2012) and the Act on External Legal Relationships of Islamic Religious Societies (Islamgesetz 2015) is necessary. Regarding for instance the legal standing of the Islamic religious Community in Austria this course is of importance as parallel regulations for other legally recognized religious communities will be examined.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Participation in class: So-called “collaboration plus” is noted.
2. Written colloquium within the last course unit on Monday, June 22rd (duration: 40 minutes). Alternatively, the colloquium can also be held orally and digitally until the end of July. The colloquia questions are taken exclusively from a catalog, which contains a total of 20 questions and is made known to the students over the course of the semester.
There is also the possibility of taking a VOLUNTARY written midterm exam within the course unit on Monday, May 18th, based on the material of the first script (duration: 20 minutes). If the midterm exam is rated better than the answer to the question on script 1 within the final colloquium, then the result of the interim exam will be used for the final grade and the answer to the question on script 1 will be used as part of the final colloquium (FAVORABILITY PRINCIPLE!!!).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Compulsory attendance (please do not miss more than four times); Collaboration in class; The result of the final colloquium will form around two thirds of the grades, and the collaboration will form around a third.

Examination topics

Basically: Two documents that will be made available. Please note that colloquia questions are only asked from a 20 questions contained.

Reading list

The mentioned documents will contain a good number of references to printed literature. Please note that the referenced literature per se does not constitute colloquium material.
