Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on the legal field of intellectual property law which is concerned with the protection of intellectual achievements and plays a prominent role in contemporary entrepreneurship. The course deals with the basics of the so-called industrial property rights (patent, trademark, design and equipment law) and those of copyright. The participants will be taught basic knowledge in particular with regard to the object of protection, acquisition and scope as well as legal consequences in the event of infringement of the mentioned intellectual property rights and their enormous importance for practical business life will be demonstrated. After completing the course, students should have basic knowledge in the field of intellectual property law, recognize its importance for practice and be able to use this knowledge to answer questions relevant to practice.

Two written online exams (45% each) via Moodle.

Copying from the internet or from textbooks in the case of online open book exams and the use of an annotated law texts or labeled post-its in the case of on site exams with personal presence is not permitted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mandatory attendance in the online units. Students who are not present in the first unit will be deregistered from the course unless there is an important reason for their absence. (Apology and proof must be sent to Dr. Miernicki; martin.miernicki@univie.ac.at before the 1st unit).
The assessment is based on active participation (10% = 8 points), as well as 2 online exams (each exam 45% = 36 points, duration of each exam: 90 minutes). A maximum of 80 points will be awarded. With a minimum of 41 points, the course is positively completed. Grade key: from 41 points - sufficient (4), from 51 points - satisfactory (3), from 61 points - good (2), from 71 points - very good (1).

The exam will cover the legal provisions, case studies and exercises discussed in course as well as the scripts
