Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture will be in class and in English.

i. Format:
There will be two lectures per week, plus a tutorial to discuss the weekly problem set. All course materials will be made available on Moodle.

ii. Content:
This is an introductory course in microeconomics. In the first part of the course, students are introduced to functioning of perfectly competitive markets. In the second part, we examine departures from the competitive market model, for example, market power, externalities, public goods, and asymmetric information. Finally, we discuss the role and scope of government intervention in markets. Basic mathematical knowledge is required (especially algebra, differential calculus, optimization without constraints).

iii. Objectives:
The course has the following learning objectives: (1) to introduce basic microeconomic principles, (2) to analyze the economic world using economic models, (3) to develop critical thinking.

Assessment and permitted materials

Quizzes: 20%.
Midterm exam: 35 %.
Final exam: 45 %.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To receive a passing grade, the following requirements must be met:
1) At least 50% of the total score across all assessment components.
2) At least 50% on the exam component. The exam component is calculated as the weighted average of the midterm (35/80) and the final exam (45/80).
3) At least 50% of the quizzes must be completed. These take place during the lectures.

Examination topics

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aim: Students will become familiar with the fundamentals of microeconomics and economic thinking. Upon successful completion, they will be able to identify different market forms (perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly), perform equilibrium analysis in simple numerical examples, solve microeconomic optimization problems (utility and profit maximization under constraints), and apply comparative statics to elementary economic questions.

Content: The first half of the course covers the fundamentals of the ideal model of competitive markets in detail. Consumption and production theory, as well as the principle of utility and profit maximization are explained. The second part examines how real markets differ from this ideal, for example due to market power, the existence of external effects, public goods, or asymmetric information problems. Finally, the role of government intervention in markets is discussed. Basic mathematical knowledge is required (especially algebra, differential calculus, and optimization with constraints).

Method: There are two course units per week and a voluntary Q&A unit to discuss the exercises. The relevant course material, lecture notes, handouts, exercise sheets, and homework quizzes for these exercises are made available weekly on Moodle. These homework tests usually remain available for one week. By submitting them, students receive ongoing feedback on their progress. Students are expected to have access to a standard textbook and to complete the weekly reading assignments in advance to be able to actively participate in class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment is carried out during the course and consists of the following components: active class participation (20%), midterm exam (35%), and final exam (45%).

Tasks for active participation are set regularly during the course. These are carried out in the form of in-class quizzes. Students should complete at least 50% of these assignments and have enough opportunity during the semester to complete the required number of assignments.

Important exam dates are: midterm exam on May 6, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and final exam on June 24, 2026, from 4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The following requirements must be met in order to pass:

  • At least 50% of the overall grade across different grading aspects.
  • At least 50% of the exam grade. The exam grade is calculated from the weighted average of the midterm exam (35/80) and the final exam (45/80).
  • Successful completion of at least 50% of the in-class quizzes offered during the semester.

Grades are based on the following scale: Grade 1 - above 87%, Grade 2 - above 75%, Grade 3 - above 63%; Grade 4 - above 50%.

Examination topics

All contents and materials presented and made available in the course platform.
