Students not attending the first class meeting on October 7, 2025 (in which also a lot of organizational issues will be announced and discussed) will automatically be de-registered from the course. Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar we will examine (long-term) effects of political order, institutions, culture, geography, trade, economic aid and inequality on economic development. For this purpose, participants will study, analyze, present and discuss various articles that mostly have an empirical focus. By doing so, participants will learn about how more recently analyzed factors affect economic development, and learn to critically discuss and asses scientific papers.

Assessment and permitted materials

To complete the seminar the following activities are mandatory:

* Presentation of up to two papers in class
* Brief comments on a third paper during class
* Possibly, a seminar paper on a fourth paper
* Active participation and discussion during class meetings

The exact weights of these activities for the composition of the final grade will be announced during the first class meeting.
